What are garment bags and why do we need them? This very convenient piece of luggage will hold your clothing much neater and almost wrinkle free. It is the best way to pack dressier clothing or business attire. It's also the easiest to travel because you pack everything on hangers. It is virtually the only way to pack men's suits or sports jackets without needing to send the jackets our for pressing when you arrive. Garment bags also pack women's business suits wrinkle free. If you have an executive position, or are going on a business trip, garment bags are still the best way to go. There is not another piece of luggage that will hold your clothes as well on hangers. They are also the perfect way to pack for a cruise where you usually need dressier clothing in the evenings.
The best way to pack a garment bag is to use the thin wire hangers from the dry cleaners. Pack one outfit per hanger. For men, you want to begin with the men's sport or suit jacket, the slacks, a shirt, and a tie and belt. Women need to pack their suit, blouse, belt and scarf together on one hanger also. By organizing your packing in this way, you'll rarely forget anything! Put aside shoes, or a purse that needs to go with the outfit. If possible, hang the garment bag when packing. You can put a towel over the door, and hang the hook over the towel to protect the door finish. Then hang your clothing. Gravity keeps everything straight and neat as can be. You can also pack with dry cleaning plastic bags that will create a layer of air around the garments. Just be careful not to catch the plastic bag in the zipper! When you arrive at the hotel, the clothing can go directly into the room closet. No need to change hangers, just hang the clothes as you remove them.
Many garment bags have lots of zippered pockets for underwear, socks and pajamas. These zippered pockets will also accommodate shoes, and cosmetics. Be sure cosmetics are plastic wrapped to prevent spilling. Shoes can also be slipped into shoe covers to keep clothing clean. There may also be an outside pocket where you can put a lightweight jacket or sweaters. Some casual clothing may be placed in the outside pocket.
Garment bags do hold a lot of clothing and come in many sizes. There are slim covers that will hold only one or two hangers. There are very large versions that easily hold over twenty garments on hangers. Some of these handy cases now fold in thirds, so they will fit the new airport templates for carry on luggage. Remember when taking a carry on, you cannot carry liquids and gels except in the three-one-one case. This is a clear plastic one-quart sized bag filled with bottles or jars of three ounces or less. And you are permitted only one per person. You may want to choose the wheeled garment bag versions when you know you'll be packing a lot of clothing. The wheels will make getting through these large airports much easier. Even lightweight bags can get heavy when you have a long way to walk. Many of these bags are more like portable closets, and do not have to be unpacked when you reach your destination. They have double hooks letting you hang the whole case. You can virtually live out of the case, like a small traveling closet. Grab your clothes and enjoy packing!
